When you are looking for ways to farewell a loved one, you may opt for a memorial service. This can take place directly after the passing, or it may take place at a later date when it is more convenient for friends and family to gather. You might choose to have a funeral and a memorial service, and there is a place for both.
The Natural Funeral Company has a beautiful old brick church in Auckland where you could choose to hold a memorial service, or we can help you to arrange a memorial at another venue. Many people opt for a church, hall or a private garden or home, and the important thing is to honour the wishes of your loved one and to provide a place where people can gather to share memories, grief and love.
Our compassionate team can help you every step of the way, so if you want us to take care of organising your memorial service, get in touch for a chat.
What do you need to provide?
A memorial service will likely have a place for everyone to sit, somewhere people can stand and speak, and you may want some audio visual equipment for a video tribute or a slideshow of photos. You may wish to provide a microphone, and it’s likely that flowers will be sent, so it’s a good idea to make preparations to display and transport them.
Catering
Generally people like to share food at a memorial. You could provide food and service, plus all the things you will need to serve up the food, you could ask people to bring food – or you can opt for professional funeral catering to take care of all the refreshments and the clean up.
Celebrant
While some people are comfortable to preside over the memorial themselves, others may prefer a professional funeral celebrant to lead and guide. This is a great way to add some structure to the event and many celebrants have lots of experience with memorial services and can deliver a heartfelt and personal tribute for your loved one.
Order of Service
You may want to print out an order of service, with songs, readings and a schedule for those who wish to speak. Your celebrant will be able to guide your mourners through the order of service.
Urns
The body of the deceased is usually not present at a memorial service, however you may wish to bring an urn with the ashes if you have opted for direct cremation. If you prefer, many people like a large photographic tribute placed on an easel. This is a very personal choice.
